Finding herbal medicine

For the first 27 years of my life I lived as most young people do, without a ton of thought on how I was treating my body. I thought that I was eating healthily (for the most part) and because I was naturally lean and in decent shape I figured that meant that I could eat what I wanted, when I wanted.

Then I moved from a big city to the subtropical rainforest. Within the first week of the new and exciting move I contracted Blastocystis hominis from contaminated tank water.

For the first time in my life the negative feedback loops were self evident. I was bloated constantly with diarrhoea daily. I had stomach cramps and certain food (I’m talking to you bread!) really affected my mood.

I took a round of antibiotics (that had a very low strike rate) and even though they weren’t the most heavy hitting drugs they nearly killed me.

Unfortunately they didn’t kill the parasite.

Functional Medicine With a Herbal Twist

Then I found functional medicine.

I went on the elimination diet and my symptoms improved dramatically! I tried a number of different half baked herbal protocols with very limited success.

Then I finally bit the bullet and decided to invest in my own health with a number of functional medicine gut tests.

To my surprise I found FIVE infections. Three bacterial infections and two parasitic infections!

Fully Functional Medicine

Being so unwell (lack of energy, moodiness, poor digestion and bloating to name a few symptoms) has sparked my passion for herbal medicine, nutrition and functional medicine.

Looking deeper and deeper into the framework of functional medicine it’s clear that our western conventional medicine model is broken in many ways, especially in regards to chronic disease.

If you are struggling with a chronic digestive illness, parasite infection, dysbiosis or just want to live a better, healthier life then I hope that some of the information I will be gathering here helps.
